Municipal Building in Milas

Year: 2018
Type: Competition
Status: Design
Team: Epigram Architecture and Design

The project is a result of a municipal building competition in Turkey. The site is in the Aegean (part of Medditerrenian) side of the country; Muğla, Milas. Milas is a small district nestled beneath Sadra Mountain. The city center is formed along the stream, and the project area is situated nearby. In accordance with the design inputs, we positioned buildings towards the rear of the area to create a social square in the front. The "L-shaped" building is divided according to the street and serves as a functional space for social and municipal purposes. Additionally, the two buildings are connected by a wooden pergola structure, creating a corridor.

The area invites people to the spacious square first. The significance of this pre-place is creating social interactions for city users in a free landscape area with pool and dining spaces. The square is covered by buildings on the north and east sides, trees on the south side, and fully open on the west side. In the entrance, there is the most iconic gesture of the project is the reflective pool under the cantilever part of the social building. The pool is designed to create continuity with the nearby stream as a water element.

The social block consists of workshop, library spaces, and an auditorium large enough to meet the city's needs such as concerts and theater. In the administrative block, municipal directorates are located. The multi-office space is divided by interior gardens. The semi-open roof of the courtyard allows the garden to be nourished by sunlight. Additionally, the roof can be opened in suitable seasons to provide passive ventilation within the structure. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate characteristics, the feasibility of passive ventilation is planned for many months of the year.
